Tingdong shows live captions and translations of speech around you. This page states what the app collects, where it goes, and how long it stays.
Audio
The microphone is used only while a Live, Translate or Conversation session runs, and the system's recording indicator stays visible for the whole session.
High Accuracy sends live audio from your device to our third-party speech-recognition provider (Soniox, Inc., United States) to turn speech into text and translate it, using a key that expires within minutes. Audio does not pass through our server. The provider processes it in memory, does not store it, and does not use your voice to train its models. This is separate from recordings, which stay on your device.
On-device: recognition and translation run on your device with Apple's speech and translation frameworks. Audio does not leave the device.
Natural Voice (members, reading translations aloud in Conversation): the translated text to be read aloud is sent from your device to the same provider to make the speech, using a key that expires within minutes. The text does not pass through our server. The System Voice reads on your device and sends nothing.
Transcripts, recordings and summaries
Transcripts are saved on your device. Settings › Recordings & Storage › Save Recordings decides whether each session's audio is kept on your device too, so you can play from any line: Ask When It Ends (the default: the audio is recorded, and when the session ends you choose whether to keep it; if you close the card without choosing, it is kept), Always, or Never (no audio is recorded). Recordings are files on your device: they are never uploaded to Tingdong or to any server. If you use iCloud Backup, they are in your own backup. There is no storage limit. Delete them any time, or have old ones deleted automatically, in Settings › Recordings & Storage › Clean Up. Transcripts and recordings both appear in Files › Tingdong.
Summaries and answers about a transcript are made on your device by Apple Intelligence; the transcript is not sent to us or to any other AI service.
Credits and purchases
There is no sign-up. Subscriptions and credit packs are sold and charged by Apple; we never see your card details, name or Apple Account email. To keep your credit balance, our server (run on Cloudflare) stores:
- the App Transaction ID that Apple issues for your Apple Account and this app, which identifies your credit balance;
- your subscription and credit-pack transactions as Apple reports them: product, purchase and renewal dates, renewal state, refunds;
- for each device, a random device identifier and a hash of the device's access token;
- for each High Accuracy session, its length in seconds, the credits charged, and whether it was captions, translation or a conversation. Numbers only, never words or audio;
- for the free trial, a one-way keyed hash of the App Transaction ID, so the trial is given once per Apple Account.
What we don't do
- We never receive your audio, recordings or transcripts.
- No analytics, no ads, no third-party tracking SDKs, no selling of data.
- No account, email address or contact data is collected.
If you turn on Share with App Developers in your device's Analytics settings, Apple shares crash reports with us. That is Apple's setting, and you can turn it off there.
Retention and deletion
Settings › Delete My Data deletes all transcripts, recordings and settings on the device. On our server it deletes your usage records and, if you never subscribed, your credit balance and device tokens; only the trial hash remains, so the free trial is not given a second time. If you subscribed or bought credits, the balance record stays so Apple's renewals keep refilling it, but its usage is deleted and this month's credits are set to zero; credits you bought as add-ons stay, because they never expire. Apple transactions are kept as accounting records. Email hi@tingdong.app to ask about or delete any data related to you.
